Current Projects After the pulp mill issue went away, the FOLK steering committee continued to meet and stay involved with local environmental issues. Currently, FOLK is involved in the following: Proposed Metalic Sulfide Mine on the Yellow Dog Plains of the UP Kennecott Minerals Corporation is proposing to develop a sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains near Big Bay Michigan. Currently, the permit process is underway. Much help is needed to inform the state government that the people of the area are highly skeptical of the claims that the environment will not be compromised in this project. Proposed Development of Hydroelectric Empoundments Shortly after Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) merged with Wisconsin Public Service Corp., plans were launched to sell property for development around several impoundments in the UP. Grass-roots oraginizations questioned the timing, and the environmental impact of such a move. FOLK has been involved with this issue from the beginning. See the following web site for more information: Highway Clean-up FOLK was one of the first groups in the Copper Country to commit to the Michigan Department of Transportation Highway Clean-up project, and has participated since 1990. FOLK's stretch of highway is on US41 south of Chassell, near the site of the proposed pulp mill FOLK sucessfully protested. Cleanup occurs 3 times per year in April, July, and September. This program is supervised by Rosemary Grier (334-2660). She is happy to answer questions about the program, and recruits volunteers to help with the clean-up. North Country Trail Adoption FOLK has adopted a section of the North Country Trail. Click HERE for more information. |
