Current Projects After the pulp mill issue went away, the FOLK steering committee continued to meet and stay involved with local environmental issues. Currently, FOLK is involved in the following: Proposed Metalic Sulfide Mine on the Yellow Dog Plains of the UP Kennecott Minerals Corporation is proposing to develop a sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains near Big Bay Michigan. Currently, the permit process is underway. Much help is needed to inform the state government that the people of the area are highly skeptical of the claims that the environment will not be compromised in this project. Proposed Development of Hydroelectric Empoundments Shortly after Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) merged with Wisconsin Public Service Corp., plans were launched to sell property for development around several impoundments in the UP. Grass-roots oraginizations questioned the timing, and the environmental impact of such a move. FOLK has been involved with this issue from the beginning. See the following web site for more information: Huron Creek Watershed Project FOLK was asked to participate in the formulation of a watershed management plan for this unique creek that flows through a busy commercial development area in Houghton, Michigan. There was a year of monthly meetings which members of the steering committee attended and participated in. This project was particularly interesting to our group not only because it fit in with our vision of protecting the delicate ecology of our community, but it also involves students from two different academic disciplines at Michigan Tech who are compiling the final watershed management plan.
